Justice advocates and legal organizations aim to spark an important new conversation in the California legal community: prosecutors can and should be vehicles for social change.

Help Wanted: Prosecutors to Change the World
Wednesday, November 1 at 6:30-8 p.m.
Loyola Law School, Los Angeles
919 Albany St.
Los Angeles, California 90015

Featured Panelists:

  • The Honorable Kim Foxx, State's Attorney for Cook County, IL
  • Adam Foss, Former Assistant District Attorney at Suffolk County District Attorney's Office & Founder and President of Prosecutor Impact
  • Miriam Krinsky, Former Prosecutor & Founder and President of Fair and Just Prosecution

Moderated by: Laurie Levenson, Professor of Law, David W. Burcham Chair in Ethical Advocacy

Help Wanted: Prosecutors to Change the World seeks to break down previously held beliefs that the most important job, and perhaps singular role of a prosecutor, is to prosecute and do so to the fullest extent of the law. Under that framework, a prosecutor is necessarily tough on crime and likely to hold onto harsh policies that have fueled mass incarceration. With few exceptions, this structure makes it difficult for a criminal justice reform-minded attorney to conceive of becoming a prosecutor. Without a shift in this mindset and leadership, it will be difficult to realize the systemic transformational change many attorneys and justice advocates seek and that the communities most devastated by mass incarceration deserve.

** The panel event will promptly start at 6:30 p.m., and will be proceeded by a reception with hors d'oeuvres.

For the first time since 1979, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is revising Special Order 40, a policy that directs how local law enforcement should interact with immigrants. In the drafting of their new proposal, there are big loopholes that to allow for ICE to work hand-in-hand with the LAPD. We must rise against discriminatory policies that jeopardize the lives of Angelenos.

To learn more about the proposed policy and learn ways to become engaged, join us at a teach-in and community forum:

Por primera vez desde 1979, el Departamento de Policía de Los Ángeles (LAPD) está revisando la Orden Especial 40, una política que dirige cómo la policía local debe interactuar con los inmigrantes. En la redacción de su nueva propuesta, existen grandes hoyos que permiten que ICE trabaje mano a mano con la LAPD. Hay que levantarnos y decir NO! a las políticas discriminatorias que ponen en peligro las vidas de angelinos.
