Student, Educator, Activist, and Civil Liberties Groups Oppose the Searches
LOS ANGELES — On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education will vote on a resolution to end the daily, random searches that unfairly criminalize students, and have been shown to be ineffective, intrusive, and excessive.
A coalition, Students Not Suspects, has been urging an end to the random searches — it includes the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Southern California, Public Counsel, Students Deserve, Youth Justice Coalition, Black Lives Matter – Los Angeles, and United Teachers Los Angeles. The resolution would not end searches for which there is reasonable suspicion that a student violated a school rule or law.
WHAT: LAUSD school board vote on ending the current, daily random metal detector search policy by July 1, 2020.
WHO: Members of the Student Not Suspects coalition will speak at the board meeting.
WHEN: Tuesday, June 18. Comments and vote are expected to take place between 5 and 6 p.m.
WHERE: LAUSD Board of Education, 333 S. Beaudry Ave., Los Angeles.
